Despite his status as football's golden boy and a very handsome boy, not everything goes according to plan for Tom Brady.In December 2006, Brady split with actress and also girlfriend of three years Bridget Moynahan, who was in her first trimester of pregnancy. The baby, John Edward Thomas Moynahan, was born the following August. Although Brady was thrilled with his new son, he now acknowledges that the situation caught him off guard.
"That's not how you envisioned your life, that's not how you envisioned having children," he tells Details in its September Issue, "but it happens."
The experience has given the 32-year-old quarterback a new philosophy about how life unfolds. "Life is not living in the suburbs with a white picket fence. That's not life," says Brady. "Somehow our American culture has made it out that that's what life needs to be – and that if it's not that, it's all screwed up. It's not. You go through life and you try the best you can."
Brady, who started dating model Gisele Bündchen weeks after splitting with Moynahan, reveals that the couple's first date was set up by a mutual friend. "This friend told me he knew a girl version of me," Brady says.
"And he said to me he'd found a boy version of me," Bündchen, 29, chimed in. The relationship clicked, and the couple tied the knot last April. Bündchen is now pregnant with the couple's first child together.
Will there be more children on the way? Brady hopes so. "I want a lot of kids," he says. "I'd love four or five."
But like everyone who has seen life take them in a different direction, Brady continues, "We'll see. It's not always my decision."
